How to Join
Who can join? The main reason to have the OpenPGP Alliance is to promote implementations of the OpenPGP standard. That means we try to encourage software implementations to be developed and deployed. Anyone who develops and deploys software that supports that standard can join. Some organizations, like PGP Security (before they were closed by NAI) and Veridis, develop products based on the standard, while others offer services that use software that supports the standard, like HushMail. Membership in the OpenPGP Alliance is open to any company, organization, or individual interested in developing products or offering services based on the OpenPGP standard. But to be a member, you must have developed (or are developing) software that supports the standard. This could entail incorporating someone else's OpenPGP implementation in your product or service, like LokTek, which uses PGP to offer web based encrypted email. We don't have the resources at this time to support a large membership of people who are just interested in the OpenPGP standard. If there is demand for it, we may create a mechanism to accomodate non-implementors. This will likely entail membership fees. We just started the OpenPGP Alliance, and haven't incorporated yet. It will probably be a nonprofit organization. We will probably be passing the hat around soon to the members to raise enough money to operate the web site and generally spend the time on it that it needs. Rather than wait for that process to unfold, we decided to launch this web site now, and work out those details later.
